Luxury Basics: The Investment Pieces Worth Every Penny
By Mariotte · 5 min read

Luxury purchases only justify themselves when they pay you back in either cost-per-wear or in cost-per-feeling. A piece worn three times a season for a decade is a better luxury investment than a piece worn five times in total.
Outerwear is the safest luxury purchase you can make. A coat in real wool, with proper canvas construction and a hand-sewn lining, will outlive everything cheaper in your wardrobe and lift any outfit underneath it.
A second category worth investing in: footwear. Properly made leather shoes can be resoled indefinitely and develop character with every wear. The cost-per-wear maths almost always favours the better pair.
Bags are more personal — invest only in the silhouette you genuinely use, not the silhouette you wish you used. The most-loved bag in your collection should already be the answer to this question.
What is rarely worth real money: trend-led knitwear, fast-moving silhouettes, novelty pieces, and anything covered in seasonal branding. Buy these joyfully but cheaply.
