How to Build a Capsule Wardrobe That Works for Every Occasion
By Mariotte · 5 min read

A capsule wardrobe is not about owning less for the sake of it. It is about owning the right things — pieces that do the heavy lifting across every part of your life. Built well, a capsule means fewer decisions, sharper outfits, and clothes that age beautifully instead of disappearing into the back of the drawer.
Start with anchors. Two pairs of trousers in colours you actually wear, a tailored jacket that flatters across your shoulders, a knit in your best neutral, two crisp shirts, a versatile dress, and a coat with proper structure. These eight pieces should be the most-worn items you own.
Then add personality. A pair of statement boots, an unexpected accent colour in a knit or a scarf, a piece of jewellery that becomes a signature. The capsule is the canvas — your personality is the brushstroke.
Avoid the trap of dressing only for one version of your life. A capsule should glide from a 9am meeting to a 7pm dinner without changing more than the shoes and earrings. If you cannot do that with what you own, the capsule is not finished.
Finally, audit twice a year. Take everything out, try it on, and only put back what you genuinely reach for. A capsule that is not curated is just a smaller wardrobe.
